Val and Ned: Illumination by MoonsongWolf Val and Ned: Illumination by MoonsongWolf
A one-shot comic featuring Valkyrie (Val) the tigress and Ned the rat discussing life and death.

This was sort of a test page to practice some techniques before starting anything serious. I'm not terribly pleased with the generic panel layout, but I'll try to experiment more with it in the future. I think I'm fairly happy with the overall style, though. I just need to actually use anatomy references next time.

Medium: Pencil, coloured ink, red wine

Artwork and character concepts are © *MoonsongWolf

I would be honoured! I need to draw them more often myself. The poor guys haven't gotten much love from me lately, I'm afraid.

That's a great answer.

I was just thinking the same thing earlier. I think we go where ever we believe we go. If you believe in Heaven, you go to your idea of Heaven. If you think you are going to the Summerland, you go to the Summerland. If you don't believe in anything, you prolly just go to sleep. But even different faiths may experience loved ones in their own realities, as it were. Like I may see my grandfather, who should be in Heaven according to his beliefs, but I believe in the Summerland. He may see me in Heaven in a vice versa kind of way.

Not that you asked or anything, lol. I was just thinking on this earlier.

Sort of a, "heaven is what you make of it" mentality? I like it. :) If you haven't seen, I recommend seeing the movie What Dreams May Come sometime. It has sort of a similar theme, where everyone has their own version of the afterlife. Plus, beautiful, beautiful visuals.

I imagine that she just feels a bit pensive; like she is just realizing how much she doesn't know about the world, and how much more thinking she must do. :)

Cute concept. I like that. It makes it seem like death can't be too bad if you go to the place where you were before you were born.

This is just a little comic featuring two of the characters that I have created, Valkyrie the tigress and her rat friend Ned. I draw artwork of them from time to time, and this is the only comic that they appear in so far. :)

I really like the panel angles you used! It really helps add to the moment. And I like the Rat's answer to Val. It's a simple yet reasonable answer and very wel may be true!

You've got some wonderful animals characters and you are great at potraying them in your comics!

This is still one of my favorite pieces from you.

I can remember, the first time I saw this and read through it, the first song I thought of was from the score of American Beauty. It was called "Any Other Name". What I listened to was a variation I downloaded called the Plastic Bag Theme from the scene in the movie where the artsy guy is filming a plastic bag that's blowing in the wind.

For some reason, that theme seems to work so well in my head here for this comic.

I love your creative use of red wine. I plan on trying it for myself, as the store I work for sells Merlot, Shiraz, and a Sweet Red I want to experiment. I'm curious as to what would happen if I played around with a White Zinfandel. I know the wash would be really light because the wine is, but still...

Anyway, I ramble. Lovely piece. Lovely. And very profound.

Ah, that music is thoroughly stunning. I hadn't though about it in years, but now that you mention it I might just have to add it to my "inspirational" playlist. :)

I've tried both merlot and shiraz, with excellent results! Although I found that with the merlot, I had to leave it sitting around for a couple of hours to let some of the alcohol evaporate off to get the colour that I wanted. I'm not sure if the zinfandel will give you anything to work with, though. I tried one of French Cross's blush wines, and you really couldn't see the pigment at all. I imagine it would be the same with white zinfandels. Although, come to think of it, I didn't try letting it set out for a bit, so that might yield some results. Hmmm... I'm going to have to experiment some more, I think!

Let me know what happens with that. Ever consider mixing various inks with the lighter wines like blush, or perhaps combining ink with a white wine and seeing what happens? It may not result in anything, but I'm rather curious. I just have to get some stuff settled before I can buy some inks of my own to play around with.

And, by the way, I would be glad to send you the variation I have in my music hoard if you would like.

I've thought about mixing the wines with inks, but haven't tried it yet. My guess is that it will leave some "fish eye" rings on the paper, which is what happens when you drip alcohol onto wet ink or watercolour. I'll have to try that out later, though, because it might leave some really neat textures. I'll definitely let you know if I try it out. :)

don`t know if this has been asked before but the "to wherever we were before we were born" did you get that from somewhere or is that all you? i think that is a very good answer to that question, excellent

 I think it was prompted by a conversation at work where I said that jokingly... but I figured, after thinking about it, that is was just as plausible as any other guess about the afterlife. So that's where it came from. On the rare occasions that I have good ideas, I have them at work.

It's set in the same world, but features two different characters... although still a rat-tiger duo. I just can't get away from combining rats and tigers for some reason! Probably because they are my two favourite animals.
