The Clan Leader's Beloved by MoonsongWolf The Clan Leader's Beloved by MoonsongWolf
Ratha and Thakur from Clare Bell's fantastic Named book series. These were some of my favourite books as a child, and I was so happy to finally get a copy of her latest book, Ratha's Courage.

This started out as just a sketch on my lunch break at work. I liked it enough to flesh it out over the course of a few days and then colour it at home.

Medium: Graphite pencil, red wine, coloured ink, ballpoint pen. Fur colouration was added in Photoshop CS4.

Thakur, Ratha, and the Named series are Clare Bell (~rathacat)
Artwork is *MoonsongWolf

Aw, thanks! I'm glad that you liked it. :D

I, too, love Ratha and Thakur. They are so cute and sweet together, and it was wonderful to see them (er.. read about them?) so happy together.

Yeah. I love it that Ratha wasn't only the first to hold Fire, but also one of the first to feel Love.

oh Clare Bell, why you so cool

This is eerily similar to the Warrior Cats series by Erin Hunter....

There are a few similarities, but you'll find that is true of almost all "talking animal" stories. Most of them share a few common tropes. Of course, the Ratha series predates Warriors by 20 years. The original Ratha's Creature novel was first printed in 1983. ;)

Yes, they are called the Named series, and there are currently five books (and one short story published in a fantasy anthology). You can see all of the names of the books here: [link] Along with short descriptions if you click on them. The basic premise is that it follows a clan of intelligent prehistoric cats, and their struggle to survive and thrive as a society. :)

When I first saw this painting I thought it was Firestar and Sandstorm from the Warriors series by Erin Hunter. Then I read your description and saw that it wasn't, so I looked up the book and started to read them. I love them! If it wasn't for this picture I wouldn't have found out about the series at all. =D

I'm really glad that you enjoyed the books! They were some of my favourites as a kid, and I still enjoy them today. :) The author even has a DA account: ~rathacat. And she's working on a graphic novel version of her books, too, which I am really excited about!

I really enjoyed them! If you ever get the chance, definitely give the other books a try. They range from more traditional fantasy fare (the first book, Ratha's Creature) to politically savvy (Clan Ground) to downright cerebral (Ratha's Challenge). :)

Thanks, I'm glad that you liked it! Ha ha, I'll be honest, there was a certain scene in the newest book (Ratha's Courage) that very literally brought tears to my eyes... and I almost never cry at books! Mrs. Bell really has a beautiful and engrossing writing style. These are some of the few stories that I enjoyed as a child but even more so as an adult. :)

I'll need to hunt down my file of Ratha's Courage now. At the time it came out, I could only get the e-book version, so it's my least read (but certainly not least loved) of the series. Night-who-eats-stars is one of my favorite characters, aside from Thakur and Bonechewer of course!

They look almost like Firestar and Sandstorm from the book series by Erin Hunter "WARRIORS" in lion version c:

But I love this picture anyways, it's beautiful. I'd like to read that series sooner or later, it sounds nice :D
