Some comments on this one. I really hate that first panel. The composition is terribad due to my (stupid) last minute alterations, the motion lines did not come out the way I expected, and the tiger anatomy is badly off. Also, it should be obvious, I really have no idea how to aesthetically and creatively design sound effect letters, so if anyone has links to good tutorials on comic lettering or typography, feel free to shoot me a link.

(Also, sorry if you thought the birds were cute... tiger has to eat sometime. :()

OKay.. so I ran a bit of a search.. I don't think this first link will help you but I found it rather interesting, perhaps you can get some ideas from it - [link]

Second link is an article about Onomatopoeia which is the 'proper name' for written out sound effects (bam, pow, slam) they differ from language to language.. so perhaps you might find a list of those you can use not created with the English language? If not. mayhaps it will give you some ideas

Actually, the first link is exactly what I'm looking for! My biggest weakness right now (I think) as far as sound effects go isn't necessarily what is written but rather how it is written. I'm definitely not very skilled in lettering yet! Thank you very much for the link. I think it will be very useful, and I added it to my bookmarks for future reference. :D

Maybe you've already heard of him but Will Eisner is said to have 'written the book' on incorporating text into sequential art. I got that particular book as a gift a long time ago, simply entitled 'Comics and Sequential Art" by him and there is a very good section about how to approach text.

Personally, I've never been able to make use of its boldness, I just don't have the confidence - sound effects always seem contrived, but he does them so well - and I've virtually never seen anyone else be as good at it as he was. BUT, the points he makes are extremely good ones, worth practicing anyway, and I think the sorts of things he liked to do would work well for your piece too, because it's quiet, and the sounds are so -present- as part of the narrative. You're showing a lot, and that's great, and something he stressed too. I recommend the book highly to you!

Keep up the great work...!

I have certainly heard of him, but I'm not familiar with the book. I'm adding it to the list of books that I'm going to try to pick up from Amazon next time I place an order (looks like they have a paperback print at a reasonable rate). Thank you so much for the recommendation! That's exactly the sort of thing that I'm looking for. I'm definitely not very confident in the sounds and lettering department, so every little bit helps. :)

(And I agree, it's easy for sound effects to seem contrived, which is one of the other reasons that I generally avoid them. I have been thinking about doing a few practice pages outside of the regular comic so that I can practice effects and lettering without worrying about it ruining a main page.)

I'm really enjoying this series. It's very graphic and fascinating, despite the lack of language.
Thank you for sharing.
