So there is a story behind this painting...
Long, long ago, someone asked me to draw for them something they had seen in a dream: Nanaki from Final Fantasy VII lying asleep (or passed out, perhaps) on the desert floor, similar to the scene from The Lion King with young Simba after the stampede. At some point during the drawing phase, I lost contact with the commissioner, through no fault of either one of us. They hadn't paid me, and I had only done a small sketch, so no harm was done.
However, for whatever reason, the idea stuck with me. I doodled it from time to time, when I felt like drawing something Nanaki-related. But I never quite got past the lineart stage.
Then, one day two years ago, I decided to test out some crackle medium. But what to do with the crackle paste? Creating a parched, craggy surface came to mind, at which point this old concept surfaced again in my mind. I drew Nanaki, painted the background, and put a flat coat on Red himself... then just stopped and put it away (like so many other things that I've started).
Last night, during a collaborative painting session with *CunningFox
, her hubby suggested that we do an art piece of Red XIII. At that point, I fished this partially finished bastard of a painting out of my pile and vowed to complete it. I put the last details on him this evening while waiting on another project to dry.
It's not quite what I had in mind, but at least I finished some version of this. Now, maybe, I can at least stop thinking about it...
