Allow Me This Solace by MoonsongWolf Allow Me This Solace by MoonsongWolf
There is pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar.
I love not man the less, but Nature more.
-Lord Byron

An art trade with ~FaceTaiheiyo of her character Kiba Telay. This character has a very sad history, so I thought that I would draw her somewhere very peaceful and relaxing. Everyone needs their own special place, where they can escape from the shame and suffering of the real world.

This did not come out anything like I expected. But that's okay, I like it this way just fine. It's probably mildly inspired by the game Secret of Mana, which I am replaying for the first time in almost fifteen years.

Medium: Gouache

ohh i just found this after much gallery digging! ;) and i LOVE it!! how do you get the transparency of the birds?! and AMAZING job on the background!!

I used very light washes of gouache on the birds! When you thin gouache (or even acrylics) down quite a bit with water, they act like regular watercolours, giving you a transparent effect. I love paints! :D

I do! They're by far my favourite subjects to draw... although I'm trying to work on getting my "human" art up to snuff, too, recently. I've been neglecting them for the longest time, so now they look pretty bad.

Such a great game, and not a lot of people know about it. I keep hoping for a decent sequel or spin-off to be released... no luck so far, though. Glad that you liked the painting!

Have you tried Secret of Evermore or Seiken Densetsu 3? Those are both related to Secret of Mana. There was another one too but the name has slipped me. Whether or not you find them decent or not is another question =P

Secret of Evermore is an amazing game! I'm rather sad that it didn't have much of a following (so we probably won't be seeing an updated port of it). It was one of my favourites, though. I loved the music, the graphics, and the alchemy system. I haven't played Seiken Densetsu 3, though. I've heard that there is a fan translation available, but haven't downloaded or played it yet. I had the originator of the series, Final Fantasy Adventure (Seiken Densetsu 1 in Japan) on my Gameboy as a kid, and I really enjoyed that one, too. :)

Seiken Densetsu is really cool  Yeah, you'll have to download ZSNES to play it as far as I know, but it's worth it! I just remembered there is Sword of Mana out, and that was really great too. You should check it out :)

I loved Sword of Mana! It was a remake of Final Fantasy Adventure on the gameboy, which I played long, long ago when I was a kid. Very nostalgic! :D

Really? Final Fantasy? I thought it was like Secret of Mana... Oh well, there goes that idea :giggle:

Oh no, it WAS a Secret of Mana game! Square just called it Final Fantasy Adventure because they wanted to capitalize on the popularity of that series.

Silly Square.

This is truly beautiful. It seems like such a peaceful place, I'm sure the character enjoys being so relaxed if they've had a terrible past like you said. ^.^
It's got a lot of lovely textures, and you're great at painting backgrounds.

I lived much further south when I was a kid, and we only got a little bit of snow every few years. I LOVED seeing snow then. Now that I live in Canada, there is snow on the ground for four months straight. It is very beautiful! But I get tired of having to go to work in it and shovel it... then, since I live in the city, it starts turning into a greyish sludge from all of the cars and pollution. Blegh.

But, yes, snow is AWESOME if you don't get to see it all the time. :)

Wow, four months of snow! That sounds amazing. :) Though you're right, I wouldn't want to have to shovel it or drive to work in it. ^^; Greyish sludge? How very christmasy... :P

I live in Australia, so there's hardly any places that snow at all. ^^; I mean obviously it snows in the mountains, but it's a long drive there, and they've mostly been turned into ski resorts. So the snow is all trampled and old instead of new and fluffy. ^^;

I really adore your skill to use colors, the tones in this piece are absolutely beautiful but still natural. Such a gorgeus landscape and composition. I can almost hear to voices of the forest and flowing water.

In which part of Canada you're living? It's strange to hear that the ground wouldn't be covered by dunes of snow, as we're having, since Canada is quite northern country after all. :) (Though I have to admit that the latest winter haven't been as snowy as they used to be [in here either])

I live in a major city on the southern border of Canada. We do have lots of snow, but it melts a bit on warm days, and then the cars drive over it, and the snow machines pile it up into big piles... and it's just a complete mess after that! If you drive a few miles out of the city, though, it's quite beautiful. Lots of thick blankets of snow.
